Chemeketa Storm student athletes participate in nine sports, women's cross country, volleyball, women's and men's soccer, women's and men's basketball, women's distance track, softball, and baseball, as a member of the Southern Region in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC). Storm student athletes have a strong tradition of success both in the classroom and the field of play.
Chemeketa began athletics in 1970 with men’s basketball being the first sport to begin competition. In 1972 the first full-time athletic director was hired and Chemeketa added men’s baseball, men’s cross country, men’s track and field, men’s wrestling, and men’s golf. In 1975 men’s tennis was added to the department with women’s tennis, and women’s track and field beginning a year later in 1976. In 1977 men’s wrestling was disbanded due to a lack of student athlete interest. The department did add women’s volleyball and women’s basketball in 1977 and followed that up with women’s cross country in 1978.
From 1978-1982 the department had 11 collegiate programs and had just moved into the new on campus facility where the current Storm programs still currently operate from. Unfortunately, after the 1982 season men’s baseball, women’s cross country, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, and men’s golf were dropped leaving the department with 6 programs. In 1984 the college dropped men’s cross country as well, leaving the department with 5 programs, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, women’s track and field, and men’s track and field.
In 1988 the college brought back the men’s baseball program and the 6 programs made up the department for the next seven years. In 1995 women’s cross country was reinstated as well. In 2000 the college added women’s softball to the department. Then in 2001 women’s cross country was dropped again. In 2003 the college dropped both men’s and women’s track and field. In 2008 the college brought in two new programs adding women’s and men’s soccer giving the department 7 programs. The numbers stayed there until 2019 when the college brought back women’s cross country and women’s distance track.
Chemeketa has a proud history of success amassing over 4400 wins, a 56% winning percentage, 42 league championships, and 14 NWAC Championships. This includes multiple all-conference and all-academic performers.
